THE ROMAN STYLE alphabet, often referred to as Roman square capitals, originated in ancient Rome and reached its classical form during the height of the Roman Empire. Carved primarily into stone for monuments, public buildings, and triumphal columns, these letterforms were developed to balance clarity, proportion, and permanence. Their most celebrated example appears on the inscription at Trajan's Column (dedicated in 113 CE), which is widely regarded as the purest expression of the Roman capital alphabet. The letters were constructed using simple geometric principles—circles, squares, and triangles-combined with subtle stroke modulation created by the chisel, giving rise to natural serifs. This combination of precision and human touch established a visual authority and legibility that influenced Western lettering for centuries, forming the foundation of modern capital letters still used in typography, sign painting, and architectural inscriptions today.
