SCRIPT LETTERING evolved from formal handwriting traditions and calligraphy, rooted in the movement and logic of the pen long before it became a tool of commercial design. Early scripts developed from cursive writing used in manuscripts and correspondence, emphasizing fluidity, connection, and rhythm. As lettering entered the realms of signage, advertising, and packaging in the 18th and 19th centuries, script styles were adapted for visibility and embellishment, transforming written elegance into bold visual statements. In the hands of skilled sign painters, brush scripts in particular flourished—marked by thick-and-thin stroke contrast, dynamic entry and exit strokes, and a sense of motion that conveyed refinement, craftsmanship, and personal touch. Script lettering became synonymous with luxury, hospitality, and tradition, often reserved for names, emphasis, and ornament rather than body text. While inherently expressive, script demanded precision and discipline, and when executed well, it balanced grace with legibility, embodying both the artistry and technical mastery of hand lettering.
